Do you believe in the power of runes?

Well, if you believe or not it's obvious that the first runes were strongly connected with magic thoughts.
The first runes were scratch to different types of weapons; shields, spears, axes..... to protect their owner in battles or from evil things. There are also founds of runes in graves where no living man could have seen them, and the runes must have been written on the stoneslab to protect the buried person in their next life. This is the case from the grave in Kylver on the isle of Gotland in Sweden. In that grave the word sueus is written on the stoneslab with the rune with six extra slanting strokes. What sueus means is unknown but read it backwards and you find the same word. Powerful isn't it? The is a strong rune and it is associated with the god Tiw and it is often use in magic purposes.

We don't know from where the runes originates, but if it was possible to ask aViking about the runes, the answer should probably be that the runes descends from the gods. According to Scandinavian mythology the father of the gods, Oden, had to sacrifice one of his eyes to learn the secret of the runes. That makes it very easy to recognize Oden on amulets and pictures from the Viking Age. You just have to look for an one-eyed person.
